Art Therapy integrates traditional therapeutic techniques with the creative process of arts to facilitate change and foster healing and growth. Sometimes it can be difficult to find the words to express emotions and feelings. By integrating the use of art into therapy, people can use a different, non-threatening modality to communicate and explore aspects of themselves.
Art Therapy interventions are used together with traditional talk therapy to help people communicate while working to achieve their goals. A variety of mediums can be used (i.e. painting, drawing, dance and movement, music-making), so that different senses are engaged in the therapeutic process. This assists in facilitating creativity and thought production as well as emotional release.
Both the process of art-making and the discussion of the product are important in this therapeutic modality. Remember that you are not alone and we are here to help.
